We will be delivering G U R N E Y S_R E S O R T_N E W P O R T in flags so they can greet all their visitors with a big bold and colorful flag welcome on all eight flag poles you see here.
I have to admit, they're main entrance is looking a little lack-luster, even on a beautiful day like this. The next post will have their front entrance DECKED OUT with our signal flags, so stay tuned for the AFTER photo!

So why are the numbered flags a different shape, you might be wondering, why are they so different from rectangular letter flags? #Wusupwitdat?
We've given a lot of thought to this and here's our theory: the original makers of signal flags (remember these were originally put together by Navy dudes) did not have access to hot pink flag material, and they could not come up with other designs that would differentiate enough between the flag meanings.
So, in order to make it easier to identify flags, the conical shape was born exclusively for numbers!
Have a different theory? Let us know what it is! We've batted this around internally and want another theory. Be in touch!

]]>There have been way too many bike deaths recently and they are totally unnecessary. As drivers are increasingly distracted (myself included!) it's increasingly important to be LOUD on the road, in the visual sense. ESPECIALLY when I have the most precious cargo in tow.
So we spelled out J's name and get a lot of fun feedback from drivers, pedestrians, and just about everyone, especially in our seaside city!

I'm happy to say they held up very well considering how windy our summer / fall was.The stitching held up with the exception of the "V" flag - you'll notice a small undoing of the stitching in the lower right hand corner. An easy fix.
Keep in mind the boat traveled all over Southern New England and Narragansett Bay is well known for consistent, high winds. We had many days where the winds were 40 knots + !
There was some fading with the red - red is notoriously unstable (chemically speaking) in all kinds of paint applications and is always the first color to fade. Overall, we're very happy with the quality of the flags - woo-hoo!
]]>I will post photos as soon as we have some prototypes....
This is the pattern used for the fabric ordered from Spoonflower.com... can't wait to get it in!
]]>We test all our products for real world use. We've been flying these flags on the 26 foot Ranger Shanti, in Narragansett Bay since the beginning of summer, and they still look awesome. "They add fantastic color to the boat and they look great" says Tom Garraway, Captain. Narragansett Bay is known for serious wind all summer long. We'll take the flags down in October and post photos on how they did.
We've said it before and we'll say it again...
- the prudent mariner strikes colors (takes down flags) in over 20kts of breeze!

See our inspiration?
]]>How did we come up with our initial 107 letter package? When you break down letter usage in names, you come with a lot more "E"s and "M"s than "X"s and "Y"s. Here's the breakdown:
Then of course we had to do the "&" for weddings and kids rooms that have more than just one child!
]]>The cordage is an equally tough, but pliable poly line with wooden toggle and loop.
]]>This is the flag cabinet we based our retail display on, roughly (very roughly!). See any resemblance?
Merchandising display in-store at Frazzleberries, Newport.
Size is 19" x 19" x 6" deep. Comes with signage.
]]>Today Frazzleberries, in Newport, Rhode Island became the first retailer selling the flags. Congrats Jerry! If you're in town, be sure to stop in and say hi - a great store with beautiful product for the home.
]]>My friend and colleague Tanya Kelley found this postcard for me at an antique store in Connecticut. It seems as though EVERY boat in the harbor was "in dress" sporting signal flags. Life was somehow different back then and it seems they had more time for pomp and ceremony. Anyway, it's a great card - thanks Tanya!
